Office 365 Password Synchronization

Overview

MessageOps Password Synchronization allows organizations to synchronize their passwords from their local Active Directory to Office 365.

MessageOps Password Sync is a great alternative for organizations that don’t want the added complexity and cost that comes with deploying an AD FS infrastructure. AD FS is great for large organizations, but in many cases it just doesn’t make sense for small and medium size organizations.

Here’s a quick overview of how the solution works. MessageOps’ Office 365 Password Synchronization consists of 2 main components:

  • The Password Client
  • The Password Server

The Password Client

The job of the Password Client is to intercept password changes as they occur on the domain controllers.  Since you don’t know which domain controller a user is going to use to reset their password, the Password Client must be installed on all domain controllers.  The Password Client does not interfere with the password change process, it simply intercepts the change request as it happens.  When a user’s password is changed, the client intercepts it, and passes it off to the Password Server.

The Password Server

The job of the Password Server is to reset the passwords in Office 365.  The Password Server will be installed on a single server and all Password Client systems will be configured to use the single Password Server.  When the Password Client sends a password change to the Password Server, the Password Server connects to Office 365 and resets the user’s password.  The entire process from the user changing their password in Active Directory to the password being reset in Office 365 typically takes less than 30 seconds.

The Password Server can either run on premise or clients can choose to use a hosted Password Server provided by MessageOps.  The hosted server is a web service that the client connects to directly.  It’s intended to be used by small organizations that don’t meet the requirements for running the Password Server locally (mainly a Windows 2008 R2 server).
